Malaysia Fast-Growing Global Hub for International Students

Malaysia is rapidly strengthening its position as a leading destination for international education, with new projections indicating strong growth in the number of students choosing the country for their studies.

A new report by QS Quacquarelli Symonds forecasts that Malaysia’s international student population will increase by 8.5% annually, reaching around 260,000 students by 2030.

Currently, nearly 40% of international students in Malaysia come from China, making it the country’s largest source market. At the same time, emerging markets such as Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India are expected to show steady growth in the next five years.

Malaysia is also gaining popularity among students from the Middle East and Africa, driven by scholarship opportunities, flexible visa policies, and the country’s reputation as an affordable and Muslim-friendly study environment.

The report, titled “The Global Student Flows: Malaysia,” was launched on January 13 and highlights how Malaysia is benefiting from changing global mobility trends. Traditional study destinations such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States have tightened visa policies and increased compliance requirements, prompting students to explore alternative destinations.

According to the report, Malaysia’s appeal lies in its affordability, cultural diversity, and strong transnational education (TNE) ecosystem, which allows students to obtain international qualifications through partnerships with foreign universities.

Looking ahead, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia are expected to remain Malaysia’s strongest source regions, with inbound student growth projected to exceed 3–5% annually through 2030.

As global student mobility evolves, Malaysia appears increasingly well-positioned to strengthen its role as a key international education hub in Asia.
